| Hypnosis:
an Effective Alternative & Complementary Therapy

Hypnosis therapies are often referred to as part of the growing field of alternative medicines. I would prefer compatible or complementary practices, but in keeping with present popular terminology, I am often asked, "What is hypnotherapy an alternative for?" It is an alternative for anything traditionally treated by psychology and counseling; many things (but not all) traditionally treated by psychiatry; and many things (but not all) traditionally treated by pharmaceuticals, or the increasingly popular homeopathic and [more] Eastern based remedies.

| In certain areas of traditional
medicine, such as surgeries and drug treatment programs, hypnotherapy would
not serve as an alternative, but rather as a complement. This preceding
preamble brings us to another most commonly asked question:
Hypnotherapy sounds interesting, but why should I choose it as an alternative to the traditional therapies? Many past clients, some of whom had sought help in the traditional areas of mental health and counseling therapies for years, have stated to me after experiencing (in most cases one to three sessions), that if they had only known that it was so comfortable, safe, and easy to take care of their needs so thoroughly, they would have used hypnotherapy first. They delighted at how simply Milton Ericson, a man considered one of the pillars of modern psychology has stated that his preferred therapy was in fact, hypnotherapy. However, rarely is this point specifically mentioned by the professional community of psychiatrists and psychologists in any of the texts pertaining to Dr. Ericson and his works. Where such text references are made, other terminology is substituted, thereby disguising it from a layman. You may have had the experience where a suggested therapy or technique was presented to you as being unique unto itself with its own label and application. It is seldom explained as a form of hypnotherapy. Some of these popular practices are know as; N.L.P. Linguistic programming (Time Line Therapy); visualization techniques; positive self-talk; inner-child therapy; idio-motor response technique; etc. These various approaches are simply isolated and stylized techniques taken from the whole of hypnotherapy and presented in such fashion that you may think you are getting something unique or new. These are presently very popular. They are useful because they are simply a form of hypnotherapy. In fact, there is no form of knowledge acquisition and utilization, habitualization, or changing habit patterns that does not utilize your natural self-hypnotic learning and functioning abilities. Hypnotherapy is not singular the name implies, but plural, and could be more accurately termed hypnotherapies. Within the whole of hypnotherapy, there are 70 distinctive therapy formats from Western practices and hundreds of separate techniques with Eastern roots. These formats are further modulated to represent all the stages of development necessary for therapy progress. This provides the Hypnotherapist with a unique ability to select a module from any format, specific to any developmental stage that will best suit your individual personality traits and specific therapeutic needs at precisely that point in time. This completely personalized therapy ensures more rapid and complete results. Some traditionalists use as a part of their hypnotherapy practice, diagnostic labels in their treatments. I do not, by choice, and by training. These labels often become an added burden to the original problem, and in a way are is an antithesis to therapeutic progress. Labeling an individual has become a veritable plague in our society today. Every day, people come to my office stating that they have been told they have an anxiety disorder, stress disorder, a depressionary cycle, an anger problem, this phobia or that phobia, this or that addiction, or I come from this or that ethnic/social/sexual/religious background. All of these individuals ask if I have any concerns about that. To each of them I always reply, "Gee, you look and seem exactly like a human being to me!" In my approach to an individuals concerns, I view the human brain as secondary to the conscious and subconscious mind. The brain is like the switching centre of a telephone company. You can tap into any line and monitor the transmissions, but you are not at the source of the call. The source is the subconscious mind, the home of our memories, all that is human nature, and your spirit and soul. This subconscious mind is a unique example of the quantum principle. Time and space is no object to the subconscious mind. In the conscious, physical world, positive and negative attract. In the subconscious, positive attracts only positive, and negative only negative. From this knowledge come two powerful therapeutic principles. First, that all subconscious minds are conceived as 100 positive and that even though negativity may be ingested (especially during early, formative years) and compounded (especially during adolescent and adult years), the subconscious always desires and knows that it has every ability to return to its natural positive state. Second, that the correct subconscious semantics must be used as a language that speaks only to what is desired and never to what is not. If you are presently using a traditional therapy and it is benefiting you, I encourage you to continue. However, if you feel things are somehow incomplete, or could move along quicker, then you may wish to consider hypnotherapy. |
